How to Dry Breastmilk for Jewellery: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Preserving your breastmilk for keepsake jewellery is a beautiful way to honour your journey through motherhood. Whether you're commemorating your first feed, marking the end of your breastfeeding chapter, or celebrating your bond with your baby, breastmilk jewellery creates a deeply meaningful and lasting memento.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to safely and simply dry your breastmilk at home, ready to send to our studio to be transformed into your handcrafted piece.

What You'll Need:

  • 1 teaspoon of breastmilk (fresh or frozen is fine)
  • Baking paper or a clean ceramic/glass dish
  • A small spoon or spatula
  • A warm, dry area
  • A paper envelope or small plastic pouch (we provide one in our kit)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Measure the Breastmilk

Pour around 1 teaspoon (5ml) of breastmilk onto baking paper or into a clean ceramic or glass dish. This is more than enough for your jewellery — please don’t send more than this.

2. Spread It Out Gently

Using a clean spoon or spatula, spread the milk into a thin, even layer. This helps it dry faster and more evenly.

3. Let It Air Dry Naturally

Place the dish or baking paper in a warm, dry place (a windowsill or kitchen counter is ideal). Avoid using a microwave, oven, or dehydrator — natural air drying is the best method for preserving breastmilk.

4. Wait 48–72 Hours

The breastmilk will dry into a powdery or flaky texture. Drying times can vary depending on the temperature and humidity in your home — it might be ready sooner or take an extra day or two. If it still looks moist or tacky, leave it for another 24 hours.

5. Scrape and Package

Once the breastmilk is completely dry, gently scrape it off the baking paper or dish using a clean spoon. Transfer the flakes or powder into a paper envelope or the pouch provided in your kit.

6. Label and Send

Seal the envelope or pouch securely. Place it inside the pre-paid return envelope and post it back to us.

Helpful Tips:

  • Less is more – only a teaspoon is needed.
  • Don’t worry about the colour or consistency — every sample is unique.
  • If you’d rather wait, you can request your full Breastmilk Collection Kit from us before starting. It includes everything you need to dry and send your milk safely.
